Value In Every Person

February 21, 2008 | Filed Under Chiang Mai, Thai life, Thailand

Yesterday we visited different craftsmen. It was amazing to see their tedious work and how diligent they were at their craft. We told them we wanted to take their picture and we would bring it to them. They would either smile and then tell their friends excitedly or tell us no that they were not pretty enough. We assured them that they were and they gladly had us take their picture. Here is just a taste of the people we came across.

This man has many kind of sewing or beading item you might ever want in your entire life. It was amazing to see his amount of materials. He was so cute and excited to know he would be given an image of himself. Such a little gesture to us can bring such joy to someone who has less.

Here we are at a part of the day market that has lines of covered stands that all they sell are fresh flowers. Orchids, roses, daisies adorn the many baskets of this area. I just loved this little lady that sits here and works on flowers every day. At such an old age and yet still works continuously.

I absolutely love the imagery of this picture. We went to the umbrella market area. There are people in these covered areas that all they do is hand make these umbrellas. Each person has a specialized job with them. One, would build the frame from local wood and another, would attach the covering to the frame, another paints the covering and so on. This worman just does umbrellas of this size and design. The repetition of her work behind her as she once again makes yet another umbrella.

This lady was so sweet. She is making Sa paper. She is 54 years old and has been making paper since she was just seven. She does it every day and makes 2 Baht per sheet. Which means she is only making $.06 per sheet. She asked us to help her in making one of her sheets. She told us not to take her picture because she was not pretty enough. We assured her that she was and that we would bring her picture back to her. I find this to be such a common thought people with few images of themselves. They think that they should not have any pictures of themselves if they are not “pretty.” It saddens me and to think they don’t even see their beauty or worth.
